Coenzyme-Q-10 (CoQ10)

Coenzyme-Q-10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like, fat soluble compound that is found in virtually all cells in the body. Within these cells, CoQ10 plays a major role in the production of the body's main source of energy, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Supplementation with CoQ10 is beneficial as we age. The amount of CoQ10 in the body is highest by age 20, and these levels naturally decline. By age 80, CoQ10 is found in the body at lower levels than present at birth.

Studied Benefits

Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)

• Population research has found that CHF is associated with low CoQ10 levels that correlate with severity of disease and may be a predictor for mortality. A 2017 meta-analysis revealed that taking CoQ10 30-300mg daily in addition to conventional therapy, improves exercise capacity, reduces hospitalizations, and reduces mortality by almost 30% when compared with placebo. Additionally, the New York Heart Association (NYHA) recommends adding oral CoQ10 as a class II-IV recommendation to improve quality of life and decrease symptoms of congestive heart failure such as dyspnea (trouble breathing), peripheral edema (fluid retention and swelling), enlarged liver, and insomnia (trouble sleeping).

Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)

• CoQ10 appears to reduce cardiac events and improve survival in patients who have had a myocardial infarction (heart attack). A clinical study conducted in patients who recently had a heart attack demonstrated significantly reduced risk of cardiac events, including cardiac death, by 52% when taken as 120mg per day for 28 days and by 45% when taken for up to one year.

Nerve Pain (Diabetic Neuropathy, Fibromyalgia)

• When taken alone or as add on treatment, CoQ10 300-400mg per day appears to improve clinical symptoms of nerve-related disorders. In diabetic neuropathy, treatment with CoQ10 for 8 weeks reduced pain severity and sleep interference due to pain when compared with placebo. In fibromyalgia, women treated with CoQ10 for up to 90 days saw improvements in pain by 24-56%, improvements in fatigue by 22-47%, improvements in sleep disturbances by 33%, and improvements in morning tiredness by 56%

Migraine

• The American Academy of Neurology considers CoQ10 possibly effective for migraine prevention in adults when taken as 100-150mg daily for at least 90 days. Two clinical trials in adults demonstrated reduced frequency of migraine headache by up to 50%. Additional trials showed a reduction of 1.5 migraine days per month.

Cancer

• Results are limited; however, a meta-analysis of clinical research in patients with breast cancer suggests that taking CoQ10 100mg daily for 90 days reduced key markers of cancer growth (IL-6, IL-8, VEGF, TNF-a) while increasing serum levels of antioxidants when compared to placebo.

Suggested Use: Take one to two (1-2) capsules daily as a dietary supplement. For best results, take with 8oz of water 20-30 min before a meal.
